1944 Willys Jeep. The vehicle
registration identifies it as a 1944 with a VIN number 501801.
Based on the year of the registration this has to be a MB
model, which were produced from 1941-45, however I suspect that
this is actually a 1946 CJ-2A with a floor shift. The current
body on the vehicle
is not
the original
one. The replacement body seems to be either a CJ-3A or M38 with
a
one-piece windshield, which were produced from 1949-52. The
replacement body is an aftermarket body from J.C. Whitney that
was replaced
in the late '70s when my father first purchased the vehicle
and did a ground up restoration. I don't know what the original
body
was on the vehicle, however the original color was olive green.
The original serial number green color has survived and it has
the following numbers:
54163
followed
in larger numbers 30350. The odometer reads 52,158 however
I don't know whether this is the original miles. During the ground
up restoration done in the late '70's custom hydraulic mechanism
for the snow plow was built utilizing the power steering pump
from a Datsun 280ZX, Ford oil filter and brake cylinder were
mated into the original system, 12 volt conversion with an
alternator was done, a Datsun 280ZX radiator overflow bucket
was added and the original seats
were
replaced
with
Cadillac
Cimarron leather seats. The vehicle was last registered and
driven daily in 1986. Since then it has been used only for snow
plowing
in front of our building a few times a year and for the past
5 years it was not driven or run at all. The vehicle was always
garaged from late '70s till present. The last time that the
vehicle ran it had low compression in one of the cylinders, the
carburetor
needed rebuilding and the brake lines needed replacement.
The vehicle is located in New York and for further information please
